Planning and packing
It is often said that Kenya is a cold country with a hot sun, as the blend of high altitudes and tropical sun make for a unique and variable climate. This should be kept in mind when packing for a visit
Time, Public Holidays and Business HoursKenya has a single time zone- which is GMT+3. Most businesses in Kenya are open from Monday to Friday, though some also trade on Saturday. Business hours are generally 9:00am to 5:00pm, closing for an hour over lunch (1:00pm – 2:00pm).
Currency
The official currency is the Kenya Shilling. The written abbreviation is either KSh or using /= after the amount (ie 500/=)
Photographic Guide
Kenya is one of the great photographer’s destinations. The great diversity of landscapes, people, wildlife and history make for unparalleled photo opportunities.
Electricity
The electricity supply in Kenya is 220/240 v 50hz. Plugs are 3 point square. If you are planning to bring a video camera charger or any other electrical advice, please bring voltage and plug adaptors where appropriate.
Communication
Telecommunications – Kenya has a good network of telephone, cellular and satellite connections. Work is under way to expand this network and introduce fibre optic cables.
Learn Swahili
JAMBO is one of the most common words you will hear spoken throughout Kenya. This is the simplest Swahili greeting, and is often the first word learned by visitors to Kenya.
Health Information
It is advisable to travel with a small medical kit that includes any basic remedies you may need, such as antacids, painkillers, anti-histamines and cold remedies.
Visa and entry procedures for event participants:
All participants from states for which Kenyan visa requirements apply will be granted an entry visa by the Kenya Government, upon application.
Participants will be provided with full information on-line to determine whether they are required to obtain a Kenyan entry visa. The issuance will be facilitated through prior communication to all diplomatic missions/and or consular representation of the participants’s country of residence to fast track the granting of entry visas.
Facilitation of issuance upon arrival will be made for the participants residing in countries in which Kenya has no diplomatic and/or consular representation.
BANKING FACILITIES
Following the foreign currency liberalization in the recent past, there is no limit in transfer of foreign currency both ways. Liberalization of the banking sector has opened opportunities for FOREX bureaus. The FOREX bureaus are open from 8am-5pm and charge varying commissions, others don’t charge any. Also mainstream banks provide Foreign Exchange services as well. All main currencies are available and the exchange rates are foreign currency market driven and vary from day to day.
TAXATION, CUSTOMS AND DUTIES
Kenya will grant exemptions for goods imported or purchased before clearance through customs for the conference. Kenya Red Cross will seek to get exemptions from goods and equipment imported for official use.
Proper procedures will be advised to the relevant parties, and adequate support and staff provided to ensure the smooth operations with respect to taxation, customs and duties.
PROTOCOL AND SECURITY
A Visa Service will be established at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive and offer special services to all participants. This will include but not limited to establishment of designated immigration desk for the participants, accompaniment by protocol officers in visa processing and ensuring smooth passage at the customs area, welcome/return desk for all participants on arrival and departure and deployment of security personnel at the airport and airport VIP lounge access for all VIPs.
The Government of Kenya will ensure all dignitaries are received in accordance with established protocol procedures and extended to the standard protocol courtesies.
For participants who may want to have a multiple destination tour within East Africa, necessary facilitation will be done upon arrival at the Airport. One of the possibilities is the issuance of a Visitors Pass which allows free RE-ENTRY to Kenya if the participants holding full visas will want to travel within East Africa (Uganda/Tanzania/Zanzibar).
The Government of Kenya has recently established a Diplomatic Police Unit and full service of the Unit will be deployed for the comfort of our guests.
